To better understand the barriers to pharmacy access, RBC commissioned the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) to support their primary qualitative research with Rochdale Borough residents.

When asked about the ease of visiting a pharmacy, residents highlight three themes in particular:

Convenience and proximity: Convenience and proximity of pharmacies emerged as a significant factor contributing to the ease of visiting. Residents mention living close to a pharmacy, making access straightforward for them.

- "Very easy, one minute away from my house. A walking distance from home."

Ease of access vs. GP visits: Responses contrast the ease of visiting a pharmacy with the perceived challenges of seeing a GP, noting that pharmacies offer a more accessible alternative for minor health issues or for obtaining advice without the need for an appointment.

- "Very easy – saves time and much easier than going to the GP."

Challenges with accessibility: Some residents express difficulties in accessing pharmacies, citing reasons such as distance, lack of transport options, or operational hours. These challenges highlight that for some opening hours and proximity can impede access.

- "Not easy – I have to travel and take a bus to get to the pharmacy so I get my medication delivered to my home."

- "Easy, within 10 minutes’ walk from my house but it’s not open on weekends."

Pharmacy services

Respondents indicated a need for greater awareness and promotion of the full range of services offered by pharmacies. Some responses suggest that better information about pharmacy services could enhance the community's utilisation of these resources.

"It will be useful to advertise pharmacy services, can the pharmacist make GP referrals." - Female interviewee, aged 30-49, Kashmiri

“What can you tell us about pharmacies? How can we get to know more about pharmacy services and when will we get this information?” - Participant in Focus Group 1 (KYP Men’s Group)
