Made in Milkstone: Community Corner
As part of the regeneration of central Rochdale there will be significant structural changes made to the local area. Rochdale Development Agency wants to ensure that any changes that happen stay true to Rochdale’s rich cultural tapestry. To support this ambition, RDA are working alongside Culture Co-op to deliver a co-produced culture programme that will feed directly into the wider place-making plans.
Community Corner is a part of the Make in Milkstone Project, and it is an opportunity for the local community to see demonstrations of how artists create their work. We have had a live calligraphy session and willow weaving, with opportunities to see embroidery and traditional South Asian weaving coming up soon.
The idea for Community Corner came from the work Culture Coop has been doing with local communities in Rochdale. Something that came up again and again is the Non-Western art is not valued in the same way as Western forms of art. Local communities wanted more exposure for Islamic and South Asian arts and to showcase how it is made. They also felt it was important for the communities themselves, as there is a growing lack of knowledge about traditional skills.
Other events coming up for the Made in Milkstone Project are Chai and chat, made in Milkstone concerts. Look out for the artwork that will also go up on select buildings on Milkstone Road.
